Road safety Series: ‘Sachin Tendulkar Told Me to Finish Quickly, So I Was in a Hurry’ – Virender Sehwag
Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar helped India Legends beat Bangladesh Legends in the opening match of the Road Safety World Series 2021 in Raipur. Sehwag smashed 80* (35) and Tendulkar 33* (26) as India chased down 110 in just 10.1 overs. Vinay Kumar, Pragyan Ojha and Yuvraj Singh had picked up two wickets apiece earlier to bowl out Bangladesh for only 109 in 19.4 overs in Raipur.
Bangladesh opted to bat first and got a decent start as openers Nazimuddin and Javed Omar added 59 in 8 overs. However, India spinners Pragyan Ojha, Yusuf Pathan and Yuvraj Singh triggered a collapse as Bangladesh went from 59 for 0 to 83 for 6. Nazimuddin top-scored with 49 off 33 balls while Omar and Rajin Saleh were the only other batsmen to reach double figures, both scoring 12 each.
India made a mockery of the chase with Sehwag smashing five sixes and 10 fours, while Tendulkar was more subdued scoring five fours. Bangladesh tried four bowlers in vain.
Virender Sehwag was named Man of the Match. Speaking after the game, he said: “I was surprised that it was not a full house, but hopefully for the next game a lot of spectators will come out and support us. Sachin told me to finish quickly and that’s why I was in a hurry. Yesterday I had a five minute nets session, that’s it. My batting was simple, see the ball and hit the ball. Just keep it simple.”
Sachin Tendulkar said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed it, it’s a roller coaster ride when Viru was batting. For almost two overs he didn’t give me the strike, but I enjoyed his batting. I think our spinners brought us back in the game and that put a brake on their acceleration. I felt the wicket had a bit of stickiness and the spinners proved me right. It’s a good cause to be involved in, extremely happy to be playing this tournament.”
