India vs England: Rohit Sharma Rested for First Two T20Is, No Debut Yet for Suryakumar Yadav
India captain Virat Kohli on Friday revealed that Rohit Sharma has been rested for the first two T20Is of the five-match series against England. Talking at the toss in the first T20I in Ahmedabad, Kohli revealed that KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan will open the batting with Rohit set to miss the first two matches.
On the eve of the game, Kohli had said Rohit and KL Rahul will be the first choice openers. However, he did mention that Dhawan will be the third choice should one of them be injured of rested.
“If Rohit plays, it’s simple. KL and Rohit have been consistently performing at the top. If Rohit takes rest, or one of them has a niggle, Shikhar is the third opener. Rohit and Rahul will start,” Kohli had said.
India also got back Rishabh Pant into the mix, while choosing against handing out debuts to Suryakumar Yadav or Ishan Kishan. Instead, India chose to stick with Shreyas Iyer in the middle order.
A day earlier, Kohli had hinted that India will test out the ‘X-Factor’ players in the batting line up, possibly referring to Suryakumar and Ishan.
“We have have played with a certain kind of pattern in the past. We did not have a big tournament to work towards in the past. If you look the squad, the additions we have made we have have tried to address a few things we needed in specific,” he had said.
“Guys who can be ‘x factors’ with the bat and do things which are the need of the hour in T20 cricket. These guys have done so on a regular basis in the IPL so we have tried to cover all those basis. Now it will be interesting to see how they go about in these five games.
“These are the only five games we have as a team before the World Cup and we want to see how these guys fare in the middle. I feel the squad right now we have barring Jaddu, who will come back whenever fit, is the most balanced in terms of the options available to take the field as and when required.”
