‘I am Going to Open in IPL Too’ – Virat Kohli Expresses Desire to Partner Rohit Sharma in T20 World Cup
After leading India to a 3-2 series win over England scoring an unbeaten 80 (52) in the final T20I in Ahmedabad, India captain Virat Kohli expressed his desire to open the batting more often in the lead up to the ICC T20 World Cup, including in the IPL.
Opening the batting with Rohit Sharma for the first time, Kohli put on a 94-run stand with the vice captain in just 9 overs. Kohli batted through to help India post 224 for 2, which they defended. Kohli was also player of the series.
“Yes, I’m going to open in the IPL as well. Have batted in different positions in the past but we do have a solid middle order now – it’s about the two best players getting maximum no of balls in T20 cricket. I’d like to partner Rohit at the top and the other guys feel confident when one of us are in. I’d like that to continue,” he said at the post match presentation.
Kohli said the win in the final T20I was a complete performance and said it’s dangerous for oppositions if Rohit Sharma continues to bat that way.
“I think it was a complete game for us and we outplayed the opposition even with so much dew coming in, like the last game we defended a total again. The fact that Rishabh and Shreyas didn’t even come to bat and that we got to 230 was a testimony to the batting performance and what we can do when we get going together.
“What I liked was how we were positive in our intent and we wanted to take the game forward. Tonight it was classic Rohit Sharma and if plays more freely like that insetad of worrying about batting till the 15th over, it’s going to be tough for the opposition.
“And then Suryakumar Yadav counter attacking and taking the game even further away, and Hardik in the end – I enjoyed the partnerships.”
Summing up the series, Kohli said he was pleased for the likes of Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer. He added that India’s squad for the T20 World Cup is more or less settled.
“Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar’s arrival has pleased me, also how Shreyas has batted in the first game and last game. Ishan was brilliant but I was particularly pleased with Surya. Hardik and Bhuvi coming back well. Nattu came back in and bowled two crucial overs today. Pant has shown maturity to bat in difficult situations and it has been a series of plusses for us. The confidence levels of Thakur after the Test series is sky-high – even with the bat. Proper, proper cricketer.
“I just found out we may play some T20 series after the Tests. Our squad is more or less settled.”
